Welcome to Mark. During the fall and winter months of 2023-2024 we are joining Mark on a journey with Jesus. During the first stage of the journey we will marvel time and again at the powerful deeds and words of Jesus. Being with Jesus will raise questions about the identity of this person who does and says these things. And once we, along with his followers, think we have a good handle on Jesus, the second stage of the journey will confound us with talk of suffering, death, and destruction, calling into question all that we thought to be true about Jesus – reframing our ideas of what it means to be God’s Anointed, the Son of God.
The following guides will help us along our journey together:
- N.T. Wright, Mark for Everyone (Westminster John Knox Press, 2004)
- Adam Winn, Reading Mark’s Christology Under Caesar: Jesus the Messiah and Roman Imperial Ideology (IVP Academic, 2018)
Wright’s small volume is a standard, very accessible commentary on Mark’s gospel. Winn paints a backdrop for Mark’s Gospel that provides some narrative and historical frameworks that will help us to be better readers of the gospel. Working together with our own conversations, we will come away with a better understanding of Mark that will enrich and shape our faith and life at Crestview.
The following is the schedule for our study of Mark. As always, each class that is studying Mark will do what it is able to move through the gospel in the best way within its own membership to bring about a faithful and rich engagement with Scripture. The class that meets in Room 106 in the Main Building will be live-streamed on Crestview’s Facebook page each Sunday. The teacher for each of those classes is listed below and will be linked for ease of access.
