Whenever the Crestview College and Young Professionals group first discussed the idea of a retreat to Enchanted Rock and Camp of the Hills, the native Arkansan in me wondered if climbing a very large rock located smack-dab in the middle of central Texas could ever compare to my memories of experiencing life outdoors back home. Thankfully, I soon realized a retreat to God’s breathtaking countryside surrounded by my newfound Christian family would make sweet memories that would stay with me for a lifetime.
The beauty of the landscape was outshone only by the beauty of the people on the retreat. Whether it was lending a steadying hand whenever a hiker lost her balance, giving encouragement on a tough portion of the climb, or even offering medicine to those in pain, the college and young professionals of this group continuously amazed me with their love for one another. Throughout the day, the group grew in unity by reaching out to those who weren’t as comfortable, ensuring each person knew they had a seat at the table, a hand to lean on, and a spot in the card game. When given time during a Saturday night devotional to reflect on how the group saw God that day, the most common answer involved praise and thankfulness for the people around them. Throughout the weekend, joy was evident, laughter was abundant, and kindness was enduring.
As a young professional right out of college, I was absolutely terrified to move to Waco. My entire life was in Northwest Arkansas, including those who loved me most. But after just three months in this new world, I have come to know and cherish some of the most wonderful people I have ever met. What just started off as a few strangers meeting for ice cream and a trip to the movies has grown into a tight-knit group of disciples who love and challenge each other to be the men and women God created them to be. Although my clumsy nature and my birthplace often elicit jokes from the group (jokes which were generously bestowed upon me throughout the retreat weekend), I believe and am so thankful God put me in Waco for a purpose: to love, grow, and serve with my new Crestview family.
